Notes from the Rev

Dear Friends

In Alaska, during the rainy season, the dirt roads can become defined by very deep ruts. The rainy season is followed by temperatures that freeze the ground solid. At the beginning of one of these roads is a sign that read, "Choose your rut carefully, you will be in it for the next 50 miles." Perhaps some of us feel that we have chosen our rut and the road has been very long.
While Unity does not espouse a certain creed or dogma, we do see our spiritual lives as a science in living.
Our interpretation of the teachings of Jesus place a prime emphasis on practice. Jesus said, "I came so that you may have life and have it abundantly."
One of the focuses of Jesus teachings was to get us to claim our good. He often told us to ask for what we wanted indicating that we needed to realize and claim the abundance in our lives.
It is easy to say we would like to get out of a rut but it may take some planning to negotiate the new terrain once we do. The techniques that Unity offers consist of thoughts to think, words to speak, and positive and creative things to do. The emphasis is on the practical.
Perhaps it makes you nervous just to think of getting out of the 50 mile rut you’ve been in. Because of our desire for stability and security, we resist change. We become anxious that the new circumstances we desire might not turn out to be so great after all. In order to prepare ourselves for any circumstance we need to prayerfully build our consciousness with the realization that, "The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms." (Duet. 33:27)
If you really want the power to change your life, you can have it. Believe it, practice it, pray for it, and God will reward you with a better, happier, more meaningful life than you ever expected.
Often we find that what is keeping us from our good is some unforgiveness. This may be unforgiveness or resentment of others or of ourselves. We may have thoughts that other people are responsible for unpleasant conditions in our lives. It is my co-workers fault that no one in the company realizes what a valuable worker I am. It is my husband or wife’s fault that I don’t have enough money to do the things that I want to do. It is because of my kids that I can’t keep up with the bills.
Always when we are looking at outer circumstances and thinking they are responsible for our life experience, we are missing the real point. The point is that the outer appearances are simply that.
They are not the Truth about us or those around us. They are often reflections of our fears and anxieties. Releasing the fears we have around someone keeping our good from us can free us to receive.
We can also hold our good at bay if we do not believe we deserve to have all the good that God has in store for us. If we hold some resentment for ourselves because of some past mistakes, we will be unlikely to be open to our good. But we can forgive ourselves for past mistakes and open our minds and hearts to the activity of God’s love that will free us from guilt and help us to know that our understanding grows with every experience.
We live in an opulent universe. Supply and success are our rightful inheritance. How can we open ourselves up to the good that God has provided for each and everyone of us? Prosperity manifests, not by asking God for more, but by conditioning our minds through prayer to accept more of God’s good. An excellent affirmation to condition your mind to accept your good is:
"God is my all-sufficient resource, my instant, constant and abundant supply." The moment a need arises, God’s infinite substance is immediately at hand to fill it. As God’s child, you have been given the wisdom and intelligence to bring into expression all that is needed for your well-being and comfort. God inspires you with good judgment in handling the supply that is already yours and opens the way to greater good, greater blessings, and greater opportunities. What are the steps to tapping into God’s inspiration? Prayerize, visualize and actualize.
1. Prayerize -- God is the greatest mind. All of the answers necessary to get you out of any adversity are available in God. To bring God mind into your problem you must still your own busy, anxious state of mind through prayer and meditation. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" The mind was in Jesus because he took the time to quiet his own thoughts and opened his mind to God mind. The most important part of your day, every day, is that time you spend in prayer and meditation. "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well" (Matt. 6:33)
2. Visualize -- How do you see yourself and your world? Your inner picture of yourself and your surroundings is outpicturing just for you. The starting point in changing your life from a picture of lack to an experience of abundance is the realization that you can change your life by altering your thoughts. Your mind is such a marvelous receptor. It does not care whether the pictures you put into it come from the outer or the inner. The whole new world of virtual reality is based on the understanding that your mind will accept that the pictures you feed it are real. If you picture in your mind skiing down a snowy slope, regardless of the current weather we are experiencing, your body will get prepared for the slide. So begin to regularly visualize your life exactly as you want it to look. There are many books that will help you with this process. Shakti Gawains, Creative Visualization, Wayne Dyer’s You’ll See It When You Believe It, the long standing classic by Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich. They emphasis your ability to see life as you want it and condition your consciousness to accept that this is your reality. You will then experience more and more of life from this new reality. Visualization is a powerful tool for changing your life.
3. Actualize -- What actions do you need to take to bring into manifestation all that you want in your life? That may depend on what you want. If you want an abundance of material good in your life then you need to open the floodgate and let in that which has already been prepared for you. The single most powerful way that I have found to do that is through giving. Since abundance is about flow and since what we want to do is facilitate that flow. We want to open the channel for our good to flow forth. That channel is best opened by acknowledging God as the source of all of our good. It was an ancient tradition to give one tenth of all increase to God’s storehouse. This was not just an empty ritual but was proven to bring prosperity to those who practiced it faithfully. Since everything we have comes from God, it seems logical that as we return a portion of that good to the work of God, that an increase would ensue. The practice of tithing one tenth of all material good that comes to us is an excellent way to bring our awareness to the good that we receive. But more important than thinking about a decimal is to open ourselves to a total and broad commitment to achieving a high-level consciousness of giving.
Jesus put prime emphasis on giving as the way to achieve this degree of consciousness: Give and you will receive. Get the feeling of being a channel for the flow of good. Think give and you will receive! Then you must accept that which comes to you. You must claim your good. If what you want in life is better relationships, or a better job, more time to yourself or a nicer home. All of these things come from changing your consciousness. When we establish ourselves in the consciousness of God, the whole Universe moves to flow into us with its abundance of life and substance.
So once you have conditioned your mind with prayer, opened your mind up to God mind through meditation, visualized your life in the consciousness of total abundance and acted on the directives you receive, then be ready to open the door wide and claim all of the good that will flow into your life because as Rev Eric Butterworth reiterates in many ways, "Life is consciousness." If you live life in the consciousness of giving and receiving, this consciousness will draw to you all manner of wonderful things–everything that you need to live as God created you to live it."
Many blessings on this prosperous journey, ~ Eileen
