Vision Statement

The New World Unity Writer's Circle is a spiritual group, begun in 2003, that meets to write together, share writing and exchange information and support related to writing and publishing. Anyone is welcome to join the group at any time. No particular skill or experience level is required of attendees. Regular attendance, while enjoyable for me, is not mandatory. It's a fun time whether you just want to share a writing experience once a month or have a goal to publish. Your writing need not be spiritual or religious in nature to participate in the group.

The group meets once a month from 6:00 PM to about 8:00 PM on the second Sunday of each month. Occasionally we change the date if the second Sunday is a holiday.

Meetings begin with a brief prayer followed by a 20-25 minute writing exercise, generally producing fiction or non-fiction stories/descriptions and occasionally poetry. There is an opportunity to share what is written. The exercises are meant to stimulate each individual's unique creativity. They typically give a place for the writer to start and then go wherever he/she wants to go with the piece. There is never right or wrong in this group! In the second hour, folks share other writing (stories, book chapters, plays, songs, poetry, etc.), discuss writing challenges, or share information about things like publishing, writing software, writing magazines, etc. We close with prayer. Voluntary homework is given for those who thrive on the motivation and ideas that provides.

My own writing background includes a writing minor in college, involving an exploration of both creative and academic writing, years of professional writing (manuals, proposals, journal articles), and now, to my great joy, a return to creative writing, including a novel. As group facilitator, my goal is to make the group a relaxed experience with no pressure or expectations, only opportunity, because creativity does not flow if there is stress. By attending the group, participants have found a warm sense of community, loving support and affirmation, motivation, inspiration and improved writing skills.
